Position yourself as an expert with a media kit. The contents of your portfolio could produce a future of success for you. Jenna Glatzer, author of “Book Promotion Ain’t for Sissies”, outlines the recommended pieces for a promotional media kit. Follow her experienced guidelines to create a media kit.
- The essentials for a media kit are:
Press release
Cover art
Reviews
Q & A
Article
Author’s photo
Publicity plan - Unless you hire a publicist, you’ll write your own press release. PRWeb offers excellent guidelines for format and tips. See Resources for their online address.
- Include cover art and author photo at a size large enough for publication scanning. Attach a note indicating you can send art in digital formats in high resolution.
- Send a sampling of professional and reader reviews. Include also your blurbs and some reviews of past work.
- Create a short Q & A (1-2 page) interview with yourself that includes questions the media can ask you.
- Include a free article that magazines or newspapers can reprint and radio hosts can read on the air. Insert a brief bio with your book information at the end. Indicate on top that the article is free for reprinting.
