Hackers Target YouTube With XXX XSS Attacks

Hackers apparently used cross-site scripting attacks to prank YouTube users over the weekend, injecting pop-ups and redirecting viewers to pornographic websites. Google says it’s identified and fixed the vulnerability. “Preventing XSS attacks requires a lot of code review and, generally, outside consultants to help,” explained ESET’s Randy Abrams. YouTube Says HTML5 Not Ready for Prime Time

YouTube fired off another shot in the battle for the future of online video this week by underscoring its support of Adobe Flash over HTML5. John Harding, a YouTube software engineer, said that currently Flash offers many useful features not found in HTML5. “There’s a lot more to it than just retrieving and displaying a video.” HTML5 proponents still have high hopes for the standard, which is still “a work in progress.” Continue reading

comScore: YouTube Reaches All-Time High of 14.6 Billion Videos Viewed In May

ComScore reports that YouTube saw record viewership in May with an all-time high of 14.6 billion videos viewed and surpassing the threshold of 100 videos per viewer for the first time. The report also showed that 144.1 million viewers watched 14.6 billion videos on YouTube.com (which works out to 101.2 videos per viewer). Continue reading
